For years Zaya has balanced his relationships with his religion and his queer identity. But as secrets from the past reveal themselves, and crisis strikes his family, he is torn between loyalties, culture, and time. Written by Bilal Baig, and directed by Brendan Healy, Acha Bacha boldly explores the intersections between queerness, gender identity and Islamic culture in the Pakistani diaspora. It is a show about the way we love, the way we are loved, and how sometimes love is not enough.

Apr 10-22, 2018

A Pandemic Theatre and b current performing arts Co-Production with the support of Theatre Passe Muraille.

Written & Performed by: Jivesh Parasram
Directed by: Tom Arthur Davis
Dramaturgy by: Graham Isador

"This is the story of how I once birthed a cow...kinda..." Jivesh is Canadian. And Indian. And Hindu. And West Indian. Trinidadian too. Or maybe hes just colonized. In Take d Milk, Nah? Parasram blends personal storytelling and ritual to walk an audience through the Hin-dos and Hin-donts at the intersections of these cultures. The show is a refreshingly candid and delightfully funny look at race, religion and nationalism(s): What divides us and what were willing to accept in the desire to belong. Oh, and there's a cow.

On his 69th birthday Krapp enters into a dark room and sits quietly. After some time he eats a banana and listens to tapes on a reel-to-reel recorder. The tapes document stories from his past and Krapp is forced to examine moments of lost love, wasted ambition, and mortality. Krapps Last Tape highlights the best of Beckett, showcasing his signature blend of dark humor and existential musing. The Drawer Boy
A film adaptation of the play by Michael Healey

Directed by Arturo Perez Torres
Co-directed by Aviva Armour-Ostroff
Director of Photography Cabot McNenly
Art Direction by Joanne Dente
Music by Bob Wiseman

Starring Stuart Hughes, Richard Clarkin and Jakob Ehman. Also starring Courtney Chng Lancaster, Sochi Fried, Claire Burns, Heidi Lynch, Brendan McMurty Howlett and Paul Thompson.

The Drawer Boy first premiered at Passe Muraille in 1999. The play draws on Canadian theatre history, inspired by the making of The Farm Show in 1972, where a group of Toronto actors, led by Paul Thompson, interviewed and researched farmers in the Huron County region in order to make a play about farming.

The play went on to be one of the most produced plays in Canada and the U.S.

The story begins when Miles, an actor from Toronto, interrupts the lives of Angus and Morgan, two bachelor farmers. Angus suffers from memory loss after a war induced head injury, and aside from only knowing right now, he and Morgan live in relative peace while running their small dairy farm. Miless arrival disrupts their daily lives, challenging the notions of truth and friendship.

Last year, documentary film maker Arturo Perez Torres and theatre artist Aviva Armour-Ostroff united their respective career expertise to make the play into a film.

Shot on location in Blyth, Ontario, the film stars Canadas finest of stage actors, and includes a cameo from legendary director and theatre pioneer Paul Thompson himself.

The film is just launching its film festival tour, having won Best Premiere at the Heartland Film Festival in Indiana and Critics Choice at Morelia Film Festival in Mexico.

The Chemical Valley Project

Saturday Jan. 27 at 2:00pm & Sunday Jan. 28 at 7:30pm, 2018

Aamjiwnaang, an indigenous community of 800 residents, is smothered by Canada's petrochemical industry. Two sisters, Vanessa and Lindsay Gray, have dedicated themselves to fighting environmental racism and protecting their community's land and water. In The Chemical Valley Project, Broadleaf Theatre artists Kevin Matthew Wong and Julia Howman document and explore environmental racism, Canadas energy infrastructure, its colonial past and present, and indigenous solidarity and reconciliation.

Through a unique blend of documentary-theatre, projections design, object puppetry, and solo-performance by Kevin Matthew Wong, the show seeks to spark conversations on Canadian environmental policy, treaty rights and indigenous relations, as well as the current nature of Canadian identity and values. The Chemical Valley Project is created by Kevin Matthew Wong and Julia Howman, with the dramaturgy and advisement of Vanessa and Lindsay Gray.

The Hungriest Woman in the World

Emerging theatre collective Pencil Kit Productions premiers The Hungriest Woman in the World by Canadian poet and playwright Shannon Bramer, who comes into this production hot off the September release of her most recent book of poetry, Precious Energy. (Shannon Bramer writes with a candor that is as clever as it is devastating...drawing the domestic into utter sublimity. -Robin Richardson).

The Hungriest Woman in the World is a curious navigation of futility and meaning fuelled by a woman who inadvertently escapes from the confused loneliness of her real life into an audacious, seductive world of theatre and art. The production follows Aimee, who goes to see a play alone when her husband Rob refuses to join her. Her evening at the theatre tumbles into absurdity with dancing octopuses, overly intimate strangers and drunken mistakes.

Each performance of The Hungriest Woman in the World will be preceded by ten-minute play Paul and Petandra by Deanna Kruger. Paul and Petandra first premiered at the the 2016 InspiraTO Festival, where it received a Peoples Choice Award and was featured in the Tomo Suru Players About Love Festival in Vancouver this past June.
